Prom cancelled by COVID-19? We know how much that sucks! And we are sure this is not how any of you expected to be spending your senior year. It seems like there has just been one disappointing announcement after another and it’s been rough. We get that. Besides trying to virtually finish your studies and graduate in a world where you won’t actually get a graduation, you are also missing out on the fun social events that seniors look forward too all of high school. It’s not fair, so let’s take a moment to acknowledge those feelings. It is ok to feel mad and bummed and just plain frustrated. We are all feeling a lot of things and these “less attractive” feelings are all part of it.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about ways we can make the best of it. We know a “virtual prom” is not the same as a “real prom” but we’ve put together a list of ideas to make it the best event we can!
1. Invite Your Friends
Let’s start with the guest list. Invite your besties! Invite your whole school! Invite your dog! Make it a girls night or invite the guys too! The beauty of a virtual prom is that it can be as big or as small as you want it to be.
2. Make the Playlist
Once you’ve got the guest list, start working on the playlist. We suggest making it a collaborative Spotify playlist that everyone can add to. This will all help you feel connected and if you want to give the reins to one of your more musically inclined friends- feel free! The idea is to connect over the planning not just the prom itself, so don’t feel like you need to take sole responsibility for all aspects.
3. Pick a Theme
Pick a single theme and ask all attendees to decorate accordingly or pick multiple themes and have each person responsible for one. With the second option you can feel like you’re attending multiple proms all at once!
4. Get Decorating
Find a space in your house that is going to serve as your dance floor- your living room, bedroom, or garage all make great options. We know that you probably never planned to have your parents and siblings be a part of your prom experience but that is likely to be the situation this year. Everyone could probably use a creative project right about now so encourage the fam to get involved and commit to the theme. Go all out- lights, streamers, confetti- whatever you have on hand. Make it as beautiful or as ridiculous as you choose! There is no wrong way to decorate.
5. Get Dressed!
Prom in your PJs- totally an option this year. But if you’re feeling burnt out on athleisure right about now (we get it!); get dressed up!! Find a beautiful prom dress! The more extravagant, the better! Wear something that will make you feel beautiful and happy! Rock that long gown- no one will know you’re barefoot underneath! Do your hair and makeup! Try out a new look that you thought was too risky for prom before. Get creative with your whole look!
6. Dance the Night Away
Dance like no one is watching! Break out your best moves. Learn a coordinated dance with your friends and all bust out in unison. Line dancing for prom 2020? I think it will be a big trend! Challenge your friends to dance offs! Curfew, what curfew? You’re already home! The night only ends when you’re tired (or when your parents say so).
However you choose to celebrate prom this year the most important thing is to have fun! We will all get through this together. In the meantime, let’s dance!
